FAQ

The following questions are just a few of the many first time visitors have.  To learn more about the Angle, links in the Link page will give additional details.  The link to the NorthWest Chamber of Commerce is a recommended starting point.

Question:  Do I need a passport.

No passport is required at this time.  A valid driver's license and birth certificate may be used.

Question:  I have a alcohol related driving incident.  Will I be allowed to pass through Canada?

If the violation is greater than ten years old, there should be no problem.  Other felony convictions may be a problem.  Contact a Canadian Consolute if there are any questions.

Question:  I do have a problem entering Canada.  Are there any other solutions?

Guest to the Northwest Angle may be able to get there by staying entirely in Minnesota.  This will require traveling from the South shore by boat in the summer, or snowmobile in the winter.  There are also some charter travel companies that will transport you from the Angle to the island, or even from the South shore to the island.

Question:  Do I need a boat in the summer?

It's not absolutely necessary, but most of the beauty of the area must be experienced by boat.  The cabin is on an island, and boating is the only way to get there.

Question:  I don't have a boat.  Where can I rent one?

Some of the resorts in the area rent boats.  Go to the link page and click on the NW Chamber of Commerce to find other resorts.

Question:  Do I need a guide?

It's not necessary, but depending on your skill levels and confidence in boating and navigation, it may be a good idea, at least initially.  NW Chamber of Commerce has listings of guide services.  I would also suggest getting charts for the section of lake you will be visiting and a GPS.

Question:  Where can I eat?

There are a couple of restaurants on the mainland, and some of the resorts on the islands have restaurants as well.

Question:  Is there any shopping on the Angle?

Some of the resorts have a few tourist items as well as bait and fishing tackle.  They may have some small selection of food items such a bread, milk, eggs, and dry goods.  Any major food shopping must be done prior to coming to the Angle.

Question:  How do I get to the island in the winter?

This depends on the time of the season and weather conditions.  No ice road is maintained to the cabin.  You may be able to drive, but this is at your own decision.  Check with the locals for the conditions.  If you are coming to the Angle in the winter for fishing and don't have a snowmobile, some of the resorts have transportation and ice houses.
